Originally published as letters in Cobbett’s Political Register between 1810-17, many written from Newgate Prison. The debt caused by spending on the Napoleonic wars resulted in the National Debt being financed by paper money instead of gold, and led to galloping inflation creating hardship for the poorest of the population and the labouring classes, which is pointed out by Cobbett as a champion of the poor. Cobbett was an ardent supporter of returning to the Gold Standard.
