First and only edition. Quarto, printed on pastel coloured paper and to recto only, comprising frontispiece, two pictorial title-pages, 22 leaves of text (10 with illustrations) and 14 leaves of illustrations including maps, sketches and diagrams, of which 2 fold-out. The entire work is printed by lithography, and bound in later quarter faux leather with printed paper-covered boards. Lower board scuffed otherwise binding clean and tight. Contents lightly foxed to tex-tblock edge, with partially toned free endpapers. A very good copy.
The guide was written to enthuse the students on the school’s annual visit to Hadrian’s Wall, pointing out objects of interest along the route including the forts at Chesters and Housesteads, and illustrating what the soldiers would have worn, some familiar Roman artefacts from everyday life and excavations, and beauty spots in the area. Rare - COPAC locates just a single copy at the NLS, and that for the previous year’s trip in 1931.
