FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. xvii, [3], 315. Six plates including frontispiece engraving of the Locomotion, captioned "The First Engine used on a Public Railway". Publisher's brown cloth with bevelled boards, gilt titles and decoration to spine and black-stamped border to upper board surrounding gilt titles and Locomotion motif. Top edge light brown; brown endpapers. Armorial bookplate of the Mewburn family of Acomb House in Northumberland, who were relatives of Francis Mewburn, solicitor for Stockton and Darlington Railway for over 40 years. With inscribed notes referring to his mentions in the text, in the first instance in ink to the Mewburn family bookplate, with further pencil notes of mentions and page numbers to verso of the front free endpaper. A very good solid copy, a hint of wear to edges, hinges cracked but holding strong. Plates toned with scattered light foxing throughout.
Published to mark fifty years since the opening of the first public railroad in the world, with a detailed history of the line, and biographical chapters on pioneers of the railway system.
