FIRST THUS: New Edition, enlarged and illustrated with and Introductory Sketch of the Author by Ayre. 12 mo, pp. xxviii, [2], [1]-360. Frontispiece and 3 engraved plates by Finden. Full polished calf, recased, with gilt titles to maroon label to spine and gilt decoration, with gilt fillet border to boards Sympathetic repair to tope of spine replacing loss to leather; boards rubbed to edge with minor wear to corners. A little light foxing to prelims otherwise contents clean and bright, with no annotation or inscriptions. Overall a very good copy.
An early anthology of the Author’s primary works; five short narrative accounts together with the first printing of the biography of the Author by his son-in-law John Ayre. Richmond was heavily influenced by William Wilberforce, to whom the work is dedicated, and his tales were based upon experiences of working class parishioners. Scarce, COPAC locates four copies only of this imprint, with none at the BL.
