FIRST EDITION SIGNED BY BOTH AUTHORS. Square quarto, pp. 224. Lavishly illustrated with colour photographs throughout. Publishers’ navy blue cloth with silver titles to spine in unclipped pictorial dust-jacket. Poster advertising a talk of the same name at York and ticket for talk at Christ Church Festival as part of the Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival in 2009 loosely inserted (presumably where the book was signed). Clean and bright with signatures of both authors to ffep and “Best wishes” but no dedication. Jacket lightly sunned at fore-edge & spine and slightly creased to edge. A Near Fine copy in like jacket.
Best known for his work designing country houses for wealthy patrons, this volume examines Lutyens’ projects for the Imperial War Graves Commission and in cemeteries. As well as the Cenotaph in London and the Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval, the architect designed more than 50 memorials in Britain and overseas to commemorate “The Glorious Dead” who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War.
