Gift inscription by the author’s daughter Alice Trotter to front free endpaper, dated 1860, Melrose. Contents clean, some offsetting from portrait. Scarce work by the Scottish Physician of the Fleet (1760-1832) who was born in Melrose. Trotter was a critic of the slave trade, a medical reformer and early advocate of vaccination, insisting on inoculation for smallpox for all naval medical staff. Best known for his treatise “Medicina Nautica” on naval medical conditions in the French Revolutionary wars, Trotter was also a life-long poet from his teenage years onwards.
