FIRST EDITION in book form. Octavo, pp. xvi, 624 ; bound without half-title. Frontispiece oval portrait of Dickens engraved by Finden from a painting by Daniel Maclise and 39 full-page plates by Phiz, as called for. Full dark jade green polished calf with 5 raised bands, gilt titles to tan labels to spine, gilt decoration to compartments and triple gilt fillet to boards with floral embellishments to corners; all edges gilt; gilt dentelles and marbled endpapers. Spine and corner tips a little scuffed. Ownership inscription in ink to first blank, and faint ownership inscription to head of title-page dated 1845. Scattered light foxing, mainly to plates; minor stain to corner tip of a few leaves otherwise contents clean.
The second state of the frontispiece and first four plates (without the Chapman and Hall imprint) and with mixed issue points within the text. Originally published in twenty parts in 1838-1839, with the first in book form in the October of the same year. An attractive copy of Dickens picaresque third novel.
