First Edition, ASSOCIATION COPY. Publishers’ maroon quarter cloth with gilt titles to spine and blue paper-covered boards, in pictorial dust-jacket designed by Cindy LaBreacht. David Lodge’s copy with his signature to in ink to front free endpaper, and his pencil marginal annotations throughout. Lodge has also added “17 1/2” in ink to the jacket front flap,and has crossed out the stated age of Chatterton as 18 to the blurb.
“Chatterton” was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1987 and the subject of the novel is a present-day investigation into the suicide of Thomas Chatterton as a teenager in 1770, with themes of forgery and deceit. Lodge’s marginal annotations give an insight into his critical processes at work. Two year’s later Lodge would chair the Booker Prize jury. A near fine copy in like dust-jacket.
