FIRST EDITION, first issue of 50,000 copies in the first issue jacket. Octavo, pp. [2], [1]-140, [2]. Publishers’ sky blue cloth with silver titles to spine and facsimile Author signature in blind to upper board, with Scribners’ “A” and press device to verso of title-page. In unclipped pictorial dust-jacket “design by A” with Author photograph to lower cover by Lee Samuels in deep blue ink (later states appear in olive rather than blue), without reviews or mention of the Nobel Prize. Cover cloth slightly soiled with bruised corners and slight wear at spine tips. Endpapers a little toned; top corner just very lightly corner creased otherwise contents clean, with no annotation or inscriptions. Jacket nicked & creased with small loss to edge and significant but unobtrusive splits at folds. A very good copy in good jacket.
The last major fictional work published during Hemingway’s lifetime, the novella tells the story of unlucky fisherman Santiago and his lifelong quest to catch a giant marlin. The work heavily contributed to Hemingway winning the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954..
