Second edition, revised. Two vols., octavo, pp.. xlvii, [1], 333, [3]; viii, 423, [1]. Bound in twentieth century blue quarter cloth and pale blue combed marbled paper over boards, with paper spine labels with gilt titles to upper board and spine. Lightly foxed to endpapers with nicks to leaf edges, tear to title-page of vol. 2, else contents clean, tight and free from annotations and inscriptions. A very good set.
Attractively bound work by Brightonian Botanist Henry Phillips (1779-1840). Phillips was the man behind the doomed Brighton Anthaeam botanical garden topped by “the largest dome in world” which famously collapsed prior to it’s official opening landing him in prison. Flora Historica contains a wealth of information on the cultivation of a successful flower garden as well as fascinating asides into ancient plantlore.
