. Publisher’s olive green cloth; with gilt titles and an superb intricate foliate art-nouveau design by Margaret Johnson blocked in gilt and burnt orange to spine and upper boards. Top edges gilt. Spine tips a little creased, and a few corners slightly bruised; free endpapers toned; minor scattered foxing, mainly to text-block edges. “Walden” with cracked front hinge (firmly holding) and ownership inscription in ink to front free endpaper dated 1916..
A very handsome clean and bright set of Thoreau’s best known works introduced and illustrated by artist and prolific writer Clifton Johnson (1865-1940). A native of Maine himself Johnson was pioneer nature photographer as well as a photographer of the of folk-life and country life in New England. Published over three years complete sets are scarce. A suitably verdure set of the primary works of one of America’s founding transcendentalists and one of the country’s most beloved authors.
