First Edition. Large landscape quarto (approx 24 x 30cm) pp., 22. Original stapled pictorial card wraps in colour. Illustrated throughout in monochrome, with some images sepia or red-toned, and four full-page. Covers lightly surface soiled with minor wear to spine and corners. Transparent archival tape repair to upper hinge, 768 inscribed to title-page in ink in a small net hand, otherwise contents clean. A very good copy. Charming story in first person narrative supposedly by Gnawbone the pug puppy. Being in large format paper wraps and quite fragile the book is understandably rare - only 3 copies held at UK holdings (British Library and Universities of Cambridge and Liverpool) and none available in commerce at time of writing. One of Wain’s earliest illustrated books. £350.00
