FIRST EDITION in English. Octavo, pp., 88. Bound in later black calf and red combed marbled paper over boards, blind rolls to calf, gilt titles to spine. Binding in fine condition. Light toning to some pages and small damp staining to lower margin from pp 33-64 (text unaffected). Free from inscriptions, annotations, and ownership marks. A very good copy.
 
Engrossing travel journal evocatively describing Michel Bernard’s excursions through early 19th century Germany. Bernard lived a colourful life, he was present at the Fall of the Bastile, served as the French ambassador to the United States during the Quasi War and Was a member of a secret Masonic society.
