Former owner John Clayton of the Chesters (1792-1890) has been described as the Saviour of Hadrian’s Wall, as he spent much of his considerable fortune purchasing the land around the Wall and Forts, preserving them for posterity and protecting them from development. This volume, focusing on finds further south at Cirencester, includes descriptions and illustrations of Roman roads, architecture, pavements, pottery, glass and coins. Scare.
