First Edition thus. Quarto, pp., xiv, [2], 194, [2]. With 16 full-page tipped-in colour plates by Florence Harrison, each with captioned tissue-guard, plus 12 full page black-and-white plates and numerous head- and tail-pieces. Publishers’ pale blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board, gilt Art Nouveau style rose design to spine, and stylised knight in armour to upper board; top edge gilt; pictorial green endpapers. Cover cloth rubbed with wear to bumped corners and at spine tips; shaken but firmly holding. Gift inscription dated 1919 to verso ffep; scattered light foxing, mainly to textblock edge. Some tissue guards a little creased but plates in good order.
Morris’ early poetry, originally published in 1858 and here enhanced for the first time by the artwork of Australian illustrator Florence Harrison, best known for her Art Nouveau and Pre-Raphaelite designs. Several of the poems are on an Arthurian theme including “The Defence of Guenevere” and “The Chapel in Lyoness”.
