Octavo, pp., 317, plus all five plates: stipple-engraved portrait frontispiece by James Basire, engraved map of the River Calder, engraved map of Isurmium, engraving of Roman artefacts, and large, fold-out map of Cleveland, hand-coloured in outline; ads to end. Red half morocco over marbled paper boards, sympathetically recased; title and fillets gilt to spine; alternating yellow and red headbands; olive-green book-ribbon. Corners rubbed with slight loss; hinges repaired; ownership inscription in ink to front paste-down; offset to title-page, and to four other pages facing engravings.
A description of several Yorkshire towns, including Leeds, Ripon, and Cleveland, with contemporary and historical commentary. William Hutton is better-known for being the first recorded person to walk the entire length of Hadrian’s Wall, which he described in his ‘History of the Roman Wall’ (1801).
