Second edition, and the first illustrated edition. Two vols. Octavo, pp., lxxxii, 815 (pagination continuous between volumes). With 41 engraved plates depicting 17th century scenes and portraits, as called for. Brown full calf, gilt double fillet and blind roll borders to boards; six compartments to spine, blind ornaments within, each outlined with gilt fillets, titles gilt within later red and green leather spine labels; gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers and edges. Bookplate of William Hughes, 1st Baron Dinorben (1767-1852) to front paste-down of both volumes. Contemporary blue silk ribbon loosely inserted in both volumes. Scuffs to boards, corners bumped and slightly worn through, joints worn, shelf wear to head and tail of boards. Light damage where book label has been removed from front free endpaper of each volume, slight tears to foot of title page of second volume, contents generally clean and bright. A very good copy.
