A bibliographical study of Cobden-Sanderson’s bindings before the foundation of the Doves Bindery in 1893. Thomas James Cobden Sanderson (1840-1922) would become a leading practitioner in the Arts and Crafts movement as the founder of the Doves Press, but this book details his earliest craft output. Persuaded by Jane Burden (1839-1914), later wife of William Morris (1834-96) to take up bookbinding, Cobden-Sanderson left legal practice in 1884 to work as a binder. In 1887 he founded the ‘Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society’, which gave the movement its name. This volume provides a biographical introduction, detailed descriptions, photographs, and indices to those bindings that Cobden-Sanderson produced in his early years as a full-time practitioner.
