Polished navy blue half calf over marbled boards; spines with five raised bands, elaborately gilt with ornaments of two entwined doves to each compartment. The Italian born French historian and doctor Carlo Giuseppe Guglielmo Botta (1766 - 1837) is best known for this history, first published in Paris in four volumes in 1824 as the Storia d'Italia. Much of the work is drawn from Botta’s own eye witness experiences. Arrested in Italy as a spy for the French in the aftermath of the Revolution, after a year’s imprisonment, Botta fled to France, where he remained for the rest of his life. Rare.
