Brian O'Nolan (1911–1966), was an Irish civil servant, novelist, playwright and satirist, now considered a major figure in twentieth-century Irish literature. Born in Strabane, County Tyrone, he is regarded as a key figure in modern and post-modern literature, praised by James Joyce and Graham Greene amongst others. As a civil servant he was theoretically required to be apolitical hence the prolific pen names he, quite openly, used to pen his criticism of politics and politicians. His English language novels, At Swim-Two-Birds and The Third Policeman, were written under his pen name Flann O'Brien. His many satirical columns in The Irish Times and an Irish-language novel, An Béal Bocht, were written under the name Myles na Copaleen. This collection is considered the best of those columns.
