An attractive set of The Alexander Trilogy, a series of fictionalised accounts of the life and legacy of Alexander the Great. His childhood and youth is set out in Booker Prize nominated Fire from Heaven (1969), reportedly a major inspiration for the Oliver Stone film ‘Alexander’. The Persian Boy (1972) is narrated by Bagoas, a young Persian from an aristocratic family who is captured and sold as a slave to king Darius III, eventually becoming the lover and servant of Alexander after his defeat of Darius. Funeral Games (1981) deals with the death of Alexander, the disintegration of his empire, and the wars over his succession. Oxford educated Eileen Mary Challans (1905 –1983) wrote under the pen name Mary Renault and is best recognised for her historical novels set in ancient Greece.
