Duodecimo, ff., [4] 103, [14], plus other recipes loosely inserted. Morocco-grain brown calf, floral ornaments blind stamped to boards, fore-edges marbled blue, blue marbled endpapers.
An eclectic collection of manuscript recipes produced across the nineteenth-century. Written in multiple hands, likely beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, and ending in the 1920s, this is a fascinating palimpsest of domestic life across the Victorian period. Contains cookery, baking, cosmetic, and medicinal recipes. One of the authors frequently cites the origin of each recipe, giving an insight into the bookish and social resources required to assemble such a collection in one volume. Loss to spine tips, and scuffs to spine, boards and corners a little rubbed. Occasional foxing to contents, and some pages attached to one another in erratic ways for example with a nail, or glue. Some recipes in the final gathering are upside-down- it was common to flip hand written recipe books and begin a new ‘upside down’ section from the rear, often with tonics and medicinal cures, as is the case in this book. An attractive book, in very good condition considering its practical use.
