First Edition. Quarto, pp., [18], 291, [25]. With engraved frontispiece, 7 fold-out plates, and 26 engraved plates, as called for. Contemporary full mottled sheep, blind fillet border, gilt fillets to edges of boards; 5 raised bands, gilt-tooled compartments, lacking title-label, all edges dyed red, marbled paste-downs, striped dentelles. Joints worn, shelf-wear to board edges, corners rubbed, top edge slightly dusty. Occasional slight offsetting from plates but contents generally clean and bright. A very good copy.
An extensive and detailed early account of Morocco and North Africa. Includes the earliest description of Moroccan Arabic in a European source. Written by the vice consul of Denmark in Morocco, the book describes the customs, history, geography, language, commerce, and religion of the region. The plates depict many contemporary views and maps of Moroccan cities, as well as local dress, music, weaponry, and coins. The great bibliographers of books on Morocco, Sir R. Lambert Playfair and Dr. Robert Brown called the book ‘a work of much merit; in some respects the most exhaustive and accurate ever published’. This is the first printing, subsequently swiftly translated into French and German.
