Inimitably written and illustrated by Ashington born architect and artist William Mitcheson Timlim “The Ship That Sailed to Mars” is his only published children’s book. As well as designing important buildings in the South African Kimberley district, Timlin worked as the artist on numerous travel books but “The Ship That Sailed to Mars” is recognised as his masterpiece and a fantasy classic. Originally written for his son, the beautifully illustrated tale has been described as the most original and beautiful children’s book of the 1920s, while Alan Horne states that it puts Timlin in the top ten fantasy illustrators along with Rackham and Dulac. This 2011 facsimile features a new introduction from John Howe providing an overview of Timlim’s life and history.
