A clergyman and teacher along with his authorial pursuits, the eccentric Montague Summers wrote many books on the occult. ‘The History of Witchcraft and Demonology’ was his first, published by Kegan Paul as a part of the ‘History of Civilisations’ series which featured over fifty works on various areas of history. Summers was known to wholly believe in the subjects he wrote about, drawing fame and attention from how he wrote as if those prosecuted in the witch trials were indeed guilty of the crimes accused. He is also attributed as producing what was, for many years, the only English translation of the infamously violent Malleus Maleficarum.
