Second Edition, First Issue with the cancel title-page and excised dedication. Octavo, pp., [8], 3-146, 158 of appendix. Complete with 3 maps and 3 views, all folding. Contemporary speckled calf, gilt fillets to boards, blind ruled to board edges, sympathetically re-backed with gilt rules and ornaments within compartments to spine, titled in gilt to red leather spine-label. Contemporary ownership inscription of J. Lowe, F.S.A., to front paste-down. Marginal annotations in pencil to prelims. Corners rubbed, with further spots of rubbing to boards, top edge dusty. Light scattered foxing throughout, heavier to preliminaries, small tears to margins and joins of some plates, not affecting image, occasional soiling and toning to page edges. A well-preserved copy.
A translation by Joseph Morgan of Philemon de la Motte's 'Voyage pour la redemption des captifs aux royaumes d'Alger et de Tunis', which was first published in English in the same year as 'Voyage to Algiers and Tunis, for the redemption of captives'. A fascinating captivity narrative, with a detailed account of the Spanish Reconquista within the voluminous appendix.
