First edition. Octavo, pp., 320, with seventy-seven photographs within the text, as called for. Full polished calf by Relfe Brothers, gilt armorials of Bishop Holgate’s Grammar School, Barnsley to boards, in a border of floral rolls, ornate rolls to board-edges and inner dentelles in gilt; gilt ornaments within compartments to spine, titled in gilt to black leather spine-label; all edges marbled, marbled end-papers. Prize bookplate dated 1904 to front paste-down, binder’s ink-stamp to verso of front free-endpaper. Slight scuffs to board, a little shelf-wear to extremities, slight loss to spine label, binding a little tight. Occasional spots of toning within. Generally, a very good copy.
John MacGowan (1835-1922) was a Belfast missionary, who first visited China in 1860 with the London Missionary Society. MacGowan wrote fifteen books on China, and spent the last 50 years of his life travelling and living in the country.
