Octavo, pp., [4], 489, [1], plus tissue-guarded frontispiece, numerous illustrations within text of carriages from Ancient Egypt to the Gilded Age. Publisher’s maroon pebbled cloth over bevelled boards, titled in gilt to spine and upper board, with vehicular vignettes black-stamped to spine and upper board, chocolate-brown end-papers. Hinges cracked but holding, shelf-wear to board-edges and spine-tips, with a few minor spots of soiling to lower edge of text-block. Contents otherwise clean and bright. A very good copy.
A scarce and charming book on the history of the carriage, and wheeled vehicles more generally. The American Centennial exhibition of 1876 prominently featured carriages from many periods and manufacturers, on well illustrated in this volume.
