An account of the 1000 miles rode in the harsh winter of 1876, as told by Colonel Frederick Gustavus Burnaby (1842 - 1885). The purpose of such an expedition was to ascertain the probability of Constantinople resisting Tsarist threat. Burnaby was something of a legend in the minds of Victorian Imperialists for his pioneering and adventurous spirit. He served in the British Army for twenty six years, eventually meeting his end in combat at the Battle of Abu Klea. It is theorised that Burnaby is, in part, inspiration for the fictional anti-hero Henry Flashman.
