Quarto, pp., xii, 298, xxii, [2], plus photographic portrait frontispiece, two further photographic plates, and nine folding tables to end, as called for. Finely bound by Douglas Cockerell in russet full niger on five bands, titled in gilt to spine and upper board in imitation of the Dove’s Types, berry ornaments in blind and gilt to boards, all edges gilt, rules and dot tooling in gilt to dentelles; signed by the binder and dated 1904 in gilt to lower inner dentelle. Gift inscription to front free end-paper reads ‘Laura Richardson from her father, J Alaric Richardson’, James Richardson (1831-1890) and Laura Richardson (1864-1944) were the descendants of the subjects of this book. Boards and a couple of the bands a little scuffed, light shelf-wear to edges and corners, contents clean and bright. A very good copy in a handsome binding.

Douglas Cockerell (1870–945) was an arts and crafts binder and book artist, contemporary to William Morris, and mentor to Polly Lada-Mocarski, Elizabeth Greenhill, the founders of Sangorski and Sutcliffe. A genealogical account of a prominent quaker family, whose members include educationalists and abolitionists. While the book is principally focussed on the Richardsons, the author dedicates entire chapters to broader subjects, such as the rise of children’s books in the nineteenth century, and an account of the character of North Shields, which provide much-needed flavour to the accounts of a family over time.
