One of twenty-five copies only in full brown morocco, of a limitation of 100. Quarto, pp., xiv, 28 of wood engravings printed to rectos only, 32 of bibliographical notes, [1] colophon printed to verso, [4] of blanks. Ruled panels to boards in gilt and black, titled in gilt to spine, fore-edge and lower edge uncut, printed on handmade B.F.K. Rives Velin Cuve paper. Felt-lined tan slipcase. The very slightest of sunning to spine. Contents clean, bright, and fresh. A near-fine copy.
A fine collection of Bewick wood-engravings, printed from the original blocks by Esslemont on a Columbian Press, as Bewick’s contemporaries would have printed them. Clennell was Bewick’s principal assistant in the preparation of ‘A History of British Birds’, and would later go on to be an accomplished wood-engraver in his own right.
