Broadside, approximately 27.5 x 20.5 cm. Very light toning, a spot of soiling, and a slight crease. In remarkably crisp condition.
An anonymous letter regarding a now famous incident of police brutality against a North Shields pitman, Cuthbert Skipsey “a quiet and inoffensive man... very much respected” (Fynes) who was shot and killed by a police officer after attempting to defuse an altercation between miners and the police during the 1832 Northumberland and Durham Miners Strike. This
account by ‘an eye witness’ goes into great detail about the incident. The constable responsible, George Weddell, was arrested, found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to six months hard labour. Skipsey had eight children and his last son, Joseph (who was only four months old at the time of his fathers death) is better known as one of the pitmen poets, and a leading light in labouring poetry of the nineteenth century. Dated in contemporary hand. Rare, quite possibly unique.
