Large paper limited edition of a ‘few copies’ (i.e. less than 50). Quarto, pp., xxx, [2], 48, 32. Errata slip to end. Colour printing in blue, black, and red by G. B. Richardson, illustrated vignettes within text. Deep red Rexine over boards, titled in gilt to spine. Gift inscribed by the W. H. Longstaffe to title-page of first work. Slight shelf-wear to spine-tips, top edge a little dusty, mottled fading to boards. Foxing to edges of select leaves, not affecting text. Overall, a very good copy.
One of 54 tracts published by Denham on local folklore between 1846 and 1859. Each was printed in an edition of 13 to 50 copies, and this is therefore reported as one of ‘a few copies 4to’. The Richardson press was unusual in both creating its own ornaments and decorated initials, and in focusing on coloured typography. The Richardsons’ distinctive style is on full display here. The antiquary and author W. H. Longstaffe is best remembered today for his 1854
History of Darlington. Necessarily rare.
