Joseph Sturge (1793–1859) and his co-author, Thomas Harvey (1812–1884) were Quaker philanthropists and advocates for the abolition of slavery. Following the Abolition Act of 1833, Britain established a system of ‘apprenticeship’ across its former slave-holdings, which required that any enslaved person over the age of six work for up to eight years without pay. This detailed account of the lives of enslaved people was influential in the campaign for full emancipation, which was ultimately successful in 1838. A second edition appeared later the same year with maps.
