First and only edition. Small quarto, pp., ix, 127. Inscribed “M. E. C. with love from E. C. F.” to title-page, with E. C. F. being Eleanor Clarens Freshfield, Henry’s sister. Complete with original photographic frontispeice of Freshfield together with one other original photographic portrait and one facsimile plate of Freshfield’s last pen and ink drawing. Quarter vellum over turqoise green cloth, with title in gilt to label on spine. Vellum soiled, boards rubbed and slightly discoloured, fore and lower page edges uncut, half-title leaf unopened and minor loss to spine label. Henry “Hal” Douglas Freshfield (1877 - 1891) was the only son of lawyer and mountaineer Douglas William Freshfield. Henry died at the age of just 14 after an incredibly sudden illness, and this privately published book memorialises his life. It contains various accounts of his life from friends and family as well as letters and diary extracts. A monument to commemorate him stands in Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey. It is a grade II listed monument and his father, William Douglas, is buried in front of it. This copy is gift inscribed from E. C. F. or Eleanor Clarens Freshfield, Henry’s older sister. The Freshfield’s are known primarily for James William Freshfield’s establishment of the Freshfield Law Firm, which now has almost 30 world-wide offices. A poignant work and necessarily rare. £95.00
