A thrilling account of travels through Balkans written in novelistic style. The Balkans were an exceptionally unstable region at the turn of the twentieth century. In encounters with anarchists, nationalists, and minoritised peoples, the author captures the spirit of a tense region which would soon be the tinderbox for the First World War.
