Publisher’s original forest green buckram, titled in gilt to spine and upper board. Ownership inscriptions in ink to front free end-paper, bookplate to front pastedown. Hinges cracked, a little wear to joints, corners bumped and rubbed, nick to foot of lower board, top edge a little dusty. Contents clean and neat, tear to map approx 5cm affecting margin only. A very good copy. A thrilling account of travels through Balkans written in novelistic style. The Balkans were an exceptionally unstable region at the turn of the twentieth century. In encounters with anarchists, nationalists, and minoritised peoples, the author captures the spirit of a tense region which would soon be the tinderbox for the First World War. £45.00
