Duodecimo, pp., [4] prelims, 46, interleaved with blanks. Additional entries in manuscript to a small number of the blanks. Contemporary mottled calf, double rules in gilt to spine and boards, rolls in blind to edges. Spade-shield bookplate of the antiquarian Robert Surtees of Mainsforth (1779–1834) to front paste-down, ownership inscriptions of Peter and George Wanles in eighteenth-century hands to end. Minor scuffs and shelf-wear to boards, binding sympathetically rebacked. Minor toning to title page but contents otherwise clean and rather bright. A very good copy.
A list of the names of all of the voters, and the candidates they voted for, in the general election of 1741 for the constituency of Newcastle upon Tyne. The volume is organised by profession, as the city’s guilds were the primary route by which middling men became enfranchised. The book’s printer, John White (fl. 1689?–1760), was one of the eighteenth-century’s most prolific and influential printers outside the capital. A fascinating and well-preserved resource for the social and political history of Newcastle.
