First edition of the Garnett translation. Octavo, pp., [4] prelims, 345, [3] blank, 16 of publisher’s advertisements. Original publisher’s red cloth, rosette in blind to upper board, publisher’s device in blind to lower board; titled in gilt to spine. Spine sunned, gilt oxidised in spots, a few spots of soiling to boards, toning to upper board, top edge a little dusty. Contents lightly and evenly toned but clean and neat. A very good copy. The sixth volume of Garnett’s translations of Dostoevsky, executed between 1912 and 1920. Garnett’s ‘Russian Novels’ series ‘provoked a literary craze’, and introduced the works of Dostoevsky to an excited audience of British readers. £800.00
