First edition. Two vols, octavo, pp., [x] 357; [x] 365. Bound in red half morocco over red cloth by Riviere & Son, with 5 raised bands, gilt titles, Fleur-de-lis motifs and double fillets to compartments, gilt double fillets to both boards, marbled end-papers, top-edges gilt. Minor scuff to the top-edge of Vol 1, and some wear to the tips and corners to both volumes. Some light scattered foxing and toning to preliminary blanks of both volumes.
A highly attractive copy of Bingham’s comprehensive work detailing the marriages of the Bonaparte family, focussed on Emperor Napoleon I. Napoleon Bonaparte married twice; his first wife, the famous Joséphine, whom he divorced after he failed to produce an heir, and his second wife, Marie Louise, an Archduchess of Austria and mother of his son, later Napoléon II. Other significant marriages include Napoleon's parents Charles and Letitia Bonaprte, and his brother, Joseph Bonaparte’s marriage to Julie Clary.
