First Edition. Tall octavo, pp., 77, [3], plus tissue-guarded frontispiece and 21 black-and-white plates, as called for. Original green cloth, black rules to boards continuing to spine, titled in gilt to spine. Minor spots of soiling to boards, slight shelf wear to extremities, one gathering only cracked but holding firm. Even toning to contents but clean and neat. A good copy.
The first edition of a central work in fairy research. David MacRitchie was a Scottish folklorist who attempted to apply the Victorian pseudo-science of race theory to fairies, elves, and other fey beings. This work is a significant expansion on his theory of a ‘non-Aryan’ race of ancient, British dwarves, fairies, and elves, that was first proposed in ‘The Testimony of Tradition’ (1890). This copy was formerly owned by the Theosophical Society in Scotland, and was no doubt consulted by many of the leading lights in Scottish folklore.
