Prize binding in superb full polished tree calf by Riviere and Son; spine on five bands, titled in gilt to red morocco spine labels, rolls and ornaments in gilt to compartments; armorial in gilt to upper board with border of gilt rolls, gilt rolls to board edges and turn-ins; all edges marbled, marbled end-papers. Very slight shelf-wear to spine-tips, and slight wear to upper joint; top edge dusty. Contents clean, bright, and fresh. A near-fine copy.
 
A handsome copy of the biography of historian, poet, and politician Thomas Babbington MacAulay, 1st Baron (1800-59), best known for his infuential Whiggish ‘History of England’ (1848).
