Known as ‘Mr Newcastle’, Smith was a labour politician and prior leader of Newcastle City Council in the 50s and 60s. He aimed to clear the city of slum housing, as well as invest in many public projects, responsible for Newcastle Civic Centre and Eldon Square. Smith’s downfall came when he pleased guilty to corruption in 1974 amid a corruption investigation that also led to the resignation of the Home Secretary. Despite his ties to John Poulson and guilty plea he subsequently asserted his innocence. Wood’s account of Smith’s life provides a sympathetic view to his wrongdoings.
