Oblong folio, with 224 photographs mounted to 56 leaves of grey card. Cream cloth over boards by Thummler and Rutherford of San Francisco; embroidered in blue, orange, red, green, and gold thread, within trim border. Minor soiling to upper board, spine-tips and corners rubbed. Two photographs removed but contents otherwise clean, bright, and fresh.
A highly elaborate and handsome photograph album from a talented amateur, likely of a single ‘Grand Tour’ around Europe. Includes photographs of Il Duomo, Florence; the Doge’s Palace and Bridge of Sighs, Venice; Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and Shakespeare’s birthplace, Statford-upon-Avon; Warwick Castle; the Seine; Caernarvon Castle; the landscape of Skye including the Fairy Glen; the Forth Bridge; Stirling Abbey; Edinburgh Castle, and Holyrood. As well as touristic sights, the photographer had an eye for street scenes of the towns they visited, and some of the photographs show unusual intimacy for a photographer of this period. We get a sense of the modes of travel used on the trip, with one photograph illustrating the close quarters of a train carriage, others showing the car used by the travellers in Scotland, and another showing ships at sea. Posed and close-up photographs feature women only, suggesting this may have been an album taken by an early female photographer. With the book binders label of Thulmer & Rutherford of San Francisco to front paste-down. This is, therefore, a substantial photographic account of (likely American) women travelling around Europe at the turn of the century.
