Historic ownership inscription in ink to upper cover. Covers sympathetically and skilfully restored to extremities, toning to spine. Contents clean and neat. A near-fine copy. A neat copy of the first British edition. The cover story ‘The Phantom Rickshaw’ was first published in the Civil and Military Gazette for 1885, before being collected with three other stories for publication as part of the Indian Railway Library in 1888. This first British edition replicates the striking lithographic wraps of the Indian edition. Kipling said of this story ‘Some of it was weak, much was bad and out of key, but it was my first serious attempt to think in another man’s skin.’ £150.00
