[First edition in one volume], the first published in four volumes 1795, and reprinted in 1796. Octavo, pp., [2], 480, plus frontispiece, and 8 engraved plates of local scenes that feature in the novel including Raby Castle, Barnard Castle, Durham Cathedral, and Tynemouth Priory. Contemporary green half-calf over marbled paper boards, titled in gilt to red leather spine label, rolls in blind to boards; edges sprinkled red. Historic former ownership inscription in ink, partly obliterated, to front free end-paper. Spine sunned, corners lightly bumped, minor rubbing to boards and extremities; top edge dusty. Occasional light scattered foxing to contents but generally clean and neat. A very good copy.
A scarce Gothic novel about Cicely Neville, Duchess of York, the mother of Richard III and Edward IV. While set in the North-East of England, the author has an unusual sense of local geography, with one scene depicting a character looking at both Tynemouth Priory and Dunstanburgh Castle at the same time.
