Second Edition (Twelfth Impression overall). Octavo, pp., 315, [1]. Colour frontispiece and eight monochrome illustrations by the Author, plus Thror’s Map to front endpapers and Map of Wilderland to rear endpapers. Publisher’s decorative forest green cloth with black titles and illustrations, in the iconic green, blue, black and white, pictorial dust-jacket also illustrated and designed by the author. A small bump to the top edge of the upper board and a tiny amount of sunning (through the jacket) to the spine. The unclipped dust-jacket has a tiny amount of rubbing to spine tail but is otherwise fine. An incredibly well preserved copy that appears unread, near fine.
This is a remarkably clean and bright copy of Tolkien’s classic and timeless fantasy tale and the formative basis for “The Lord of the Rings”. Widely considered to be one of the greatest books of all time, in any genre, the second edition saw a number of corrections and revisions by Tolkien as well as en entirely rewritten chapter five to achieve consistency with the sequel.
