A well-produced set from the heroic age of Polar Exploration. The narrative of the First Fram Expedition of 1893-6, containing descriptions of Nansen’s voyage from Norway across the Kara Sea to the New Siberian Islands, Nansen’s sled journey to the North Pole, wintering on Franz Joseph’s land, supplemented by extracts from Nansen’s diary and an account by Otto Sverdrup on the
Fram’s drift in the ice. Nansen achieved a ‘farthest north’ of 83 deg, 13.6’ which stood for five years. ‘A remarkable achievement in Polar exploration’. (PMM 384).
