Sixteenmo, pp., viii, 111, [1], 6 of publisher’s advertisements, plus 12 engraved plates on 6 leaves. Collated and complete. Crimson quarter roan over marbled paper boards; titled in gilt to spine. Inscribed ‘J. G. Beresford Nov 19th 1831’ to front free-endpaper; inscribed ‘this was give to me from Bedale Rectory in Sep 1899 G. G. C. H.’ to same; pencil doodles to front and end free-endpapers and paste-downs. Edges worn with loss to corners, hinges and upper joint cracked with loss to spine, but cords holding well. Some gatherings away from spine but held on cords, occasional spotting but generally clean. A fair copy.

John Harris was successor to the children’s publisher Elizabeth Newberry, following the sale of her business to him in 1802. Harris issued a series of small, ephemeral, but delicately printed chapbooks for children issued at the turn of the nineteenth century.
