Quarto, unpaginated leaves of biographical sketches printed on laid paper, plus silver-gelatin portraits. Titled in red and Half-morocco over crimson cloth, titled in gilt to spine and upper board; spine on gutta-percha; all edges gilt; brocade end-papers. ‘Published Solely for Private Circulation at Three Guineas’. Minor soiling to lower board, minor shelf-wear to edges; gutta-percha dried, as usual, with some gatherings proud, and a few detached. Tears to corners of a few leaves, but contents generally clean, bright, and rather fresh. Considerably better preserved than most copies.

A necessarily rare work of biography on Northumbrian political, social, military and scientific leaders of the Edwardian era. Most biographies are of men from notable Northumberland families such as the Fenwicks, Percys, Armstrongs, Greys, Trevelyans, Collingwoods, and Ridleys, and office-holders such as JPs and alderman, as well as notable individuals such as the engineer Charles Parsons, the medic James Oliver, the journalist Alexander Steven, and the trade-unionist David Cummings. The North-East has a long history of local biographical sketches, notably Richard Welford’s Men of Mark ‘twixt Tyne and Tweed (1895).
