The first Gollancz edition of two novels, first published in 1858 and 1895 respectively, re-issued here for the first time in one volume. This first Gollancz edition includes a new introduction by C. S. Lewis and wrapper review by W. H. Auden. In the introduction Lewis says of MacDonald ‘Every now and then there occurs in the modern world a genius - a Kafka or a Novalis who can make [a myth]. MacDonald is the great genius of this kind whom I know’. Gollancz yellow sugar-paper dust-jackets are notoriously prone to wear and do not usually appear in this condition.
